Government criticized as clubs throughout the EFL set to lose out on millions of income

By Cameron Gillies

English football leagues are facing turmoil over the decision of the government to delay the allowance of fans back into stadiums, in what has caused controversy from fans up and down the country. The government has been warned for numerous weeks about the financial catastrophe lots of club’s face, some not even knowing how long they can survive for.

Test events, which were limited to 1,000 fans took place at seven EFL games last weekend including championship sides Norwich and Middlesbrough. However, teams such as Bristol Rovers suspended their test events, saying 1,000 fans would be meaningless to them with such little number of fans. With further national restrictions put into place it’s looking more doom and gloom to whether stadiums are safe, even more seriously the imminent financial disasters across the EFL which needs to be cut through to the prime minister as league one and two teams are already talking about how much longer they can continue to play games.

Within those seven tested games, fans reported back with positive feedback suggesting that with cases going up all fans tried to enjoy the moment. Everyone felt happy to be back. Everyone felt safe. From this it is obviously clear that football stadiums are one of the safest places to be when sticking to the correct measures. The highly supervised environment and safe stewarding means supporters would be safer there than mixing informally in their own homes.

Following the success of the hashtag #LetFansIn campaign across social media for non-league clubs, fans across the country now seek the same with elite level clubs with the hashtag #StadiumsAreSafe across social media platforms, to raise the attention it needs and deserves.

One thousand Norwich fans were inside Carrow Road watching their side take on Preston North End last weekend.
