Cambridge Striker Paul Mullin celebrating his second consecutive hat-trick following a 3-1 victory against Port Vale on Tuesday Evening
Paul Mullin repeated last weeks heroics with another brilliant hat-trick for the U’s in the league campaign on Tuesday night. The Cambridge forward, who’s now scored seven league goals moves joint-top for most goals scored in all top five leagues and EFL so far this season. It sees Mullin next to the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Son Heung-Min and Robert Lewandowski.
The 25-year-old joined United on loan from Tranmere Rovers on deadline day of the January transfer window last season. His immediate impact on the side scoring twice in six appearances under previous manager Mark Bonner saw the side go five unbeaten with four wins towards the end of the season, making Mullin a popular figure with supporters, coaching staff and players.
After leaving Merseyside on a free in July, it was no surprise he returned to United seeing him sign a one-year contract at the Abbey Stadium. Mullin said: ‘’I’m very happy to be back after such a long period of uncertainty. I enjoyed my time on loan at the Club last season’’.
Prior the arrival of the league two club, Mullin had experience featuring in Tranmere’s League one season in 2018/19 season which saw him net 12 goals. His experience and quality have undoubtedly shown so far this season already scoring 11 goals in 10 games in all competitions.
When at Tranmere the forward only made 17 starts in the 18 months he was there. For Mullin this impacted massively on his enjoyment for the game. Consistent game-time is fundamental for the forward, and at Cambridge he is getting exactly that. Cambridge manager Colin Calderwood has seemed to get the best out of the striker, seeing him in his finest form as a player. His goal contribution sees the U’s sit in a rightly deserved first place, winning five out of seven games.
Paul Mullin’s form has raised many eyebrows over the last couple of games, earning himself a potential contender for player of the month in League two for a second time this season.
With supporters still not back in stadiums its crucial that teams have leaders such as Paul Mullin to help provide the intensity and drive. The lack of fans is set to put more impact on players performances and therefore how successful the team is this season. But with the signing of former Premier League and Republic of Ireland international Wes Hoolahan. The 38-year-old holds vital experience if United wish to challenge for promotion. However, the midfielder has already lit up League two so far this term, providing Mullin with two assists already.
Both players are now providing the goods for United in search of their return to the third tier of English football in 30 years.
Three wins on the bounce sees U’s manager Colin Calderwood hoping that his side can maintain their excellent run into next Saturday’s clash, which they welcome struggling Bolton Wanderers to the Abbey Stadium.
