Former British long-distance runner Jack Goodwin, highlighted his capabilities by comfortably beating a top-quality field in the BMC indoor 3000m B race in Sheffield, last night which puts him 12th on the UK list so far this year.

The senior athlete, who is coached by his father Simon Goodwin and in search of a promising comeback, led his way to victory in the men’s 3000m B race, crossing the finish line in 8:13.63, improving on last years’ time of 8:17.61 set last winter.

Goodwin’s time of 8:13.63 was his third ever fastest 3000m, shy of seven seconds of his personal best set back in 2015 which saw him ranked third in the UK.

Since the Bedfordian’s 1500m gold in the National Athletics League, Bedford, back in 2022, he had only managed to race in three events across the back-end of 2022 in a year hit hard by injures.

Commenting on the race, Goodwin said: “The BMC at Sheffield was my first race for a fair few months, we decided to test the waters with a 3000m as I did this exact race the previous year. This has given us an indication of my fitness levels and so we are happy that I’m making steady progress towards my goals for the track season.

“I’ve decided to give cross country a miss this season, last season I pulled my groin doing the national cross-country championships. We didn’t want to risk another injury this winter as the groin strain compromised 2022s track season.

I’m looking forward to competing at the Battersea Park 5k on the 17th February and the 12 stage road relays in early April.”

As Goodwin showed strong grit and confidence and no sign of slowing down, it saw the gap gradually lengthen from the rest of the field. However, even he seemed shocked when he looked around after crossing the line and saw Joran Rowe of Thames Valley Harriers just two seconds behind.

Having kicked off 2023 with a win, it brings an end to Goodwin’s 218-day wait of a victory and a chance to prove his quality for the remaining of the season.

Goodwin will face a similar challenge at the Battersea 5km, London, in just under a months’ time if everything goes well.
