Continuous downpours see Saturday’s Finals Day action at Edgbaston postponed and reserved to Sunday for the first time in 18 years.
With the approach of autumn and leaving behind a not so memorable summer, the cricketing season was still in full swing. For some this would have felt bizarre starting the t20 blast campaign this late on with no fans and the weather likely to take a turn for the worst. This was no doubt the case going into the weekend knowing that constant rain would threaten this year’s Finals Day between this year’s top four contenders.
After comprehensively beating Northants by seven wickets in their quarter- final, Gloucestershire were looking to win the tournament for the first time in the club’s history. In order to progress to the final, they need to beat an experienced Surrey side who have won eight matches in a row, including Thursday’s 56 run thrashing against Kent in their quarter- final.
The second semi- final was jam packed with two teams who sure know what it takes to win on Finals Day. Lancashire who were set to take on Nottinghamshire later today took a rightly deserved victory in their quarter- final beating Sussex by 45 runs. However, their route to the last eight saw them lose the last two group matches. Nottinghamshire who toped their group with only one lose were shocked when their dramatic quarter- final game against Leicestershire ended in a tie. With the Outlaws progressing on batting powerplay due to some sloppy misfields from the Foxes it meant they booked themselves into another Finals Day.
Gloucestershire and Surrey were set to meet in the first semi- final outing today from 11am, with Nottinghamshire taking on Lancashire in the second game from 2:30pm. A floodlit final was expected to take place earlier on this evening from 6:45pm.
Constant rain was the player’s enemy today, meaning no play was possible. The four sides will try again at the same venue tomorrow with their fingers crossed that no rain approaches the West Midlands.
